Friendly greetings!
Brief background: I started making Second Life video tutorials in 2006 because I found a lot of things are simply easier to show than explain in text alone. This transpired from various independent conversations, including one in which a frustrated Resident said, "I wish I could teleport to your house and watch over your shoulder to figure out how you do this..." and a legend was born.
Fast forward to 2010 and thanks to so many Resis for your continuing support — I've been able to show my bosses that the video tutorials are a lovely thing (aka "CB and ROI analysis demonstrated highly effective value") to continue working on! I've also written a lot of the Second Life help you know today, and encouraged Residents to come together Voltron-style so things like the badass "Numerical Limits of Second Life" page happen.
And now, with the advent of Viewer 2, I'm creating a new generation of video tutorials covering both the NEW features and stuff that hasn't fundamentally changed but may be found in a different places. And, oh, workarounds for brokenness you swear at that I hope we'll fix more elegantly. 'Cuz I don't just feel your pain, I live it daily too since I'm inworld lots. I should continually learn from your experiences.
I'm focusing on tighter tasks so instead of single, monolithic tutorials, in many cases, I'll divide them into briefer parts of a few minutes at most. I often scour SL Answers and the forums to get ideas for what to make next, because what drives vidtuts are hot, real Resident requests.
So, what video tutorials do you want to see?
Along the same lines, how can we make existing vidtuts (and related resources) easier to find? I hate when something is OUT THERE but I can't find it, augh!
What I request of you is especially true if you're a volunteer helper or help friends casually and find the same questions coming up time and time again. For example, with the new web browser-esque focus in Viewer 2, a lot of peeps ask, "What's a SLurl and why should I care?" I did a video about exactly that. And some ages-old questions like "How do I move furniture?" come up, so I'm planning to cover that, too. Think about reducing needless repetition, or as time-travelers like myself like to say, breaking the loop.
In addition to our YouTube channel and secondlife.com/video , these videos will live on help pages @ wiki.secondlife.com, including the Knowledge Base section, so all the useful info is clumped together. Like kitty litter. Wait, I almost regret that analogy.
Point is, you can find the help you need to get things done FAST, then move on to whatever else it is you want to do.
Have at it, this thread is experimental and we'll see how it goes...
